RWW 33: Roubo Legs and Stretchers

Time to get to work on the undercarriage of this bench. Not much new here, more jointing and planing, face glueing, and more jointing. I solve a glue up problem in my legs, and lay out the tenons all in one swipe of the plane. Well maybe more than one swipe.

Make sure to check out The Sawdust Chronicles Beginning Woodworker contest. This looks like it will be an exciting contest where you have 30 days to build a new project inspired by an example given by the judges. The build begins on May 1st so get your entry in before then so you can participate in this exciting contest. I hear the prizes are pretty cool!

Enjoy the show!

    Hi Shannon,

I really enjoyed this episode. The undercarriage for your bench is looking really wonderful.

Just one question. When you turned the leg through 90° and planed the face that is parallel to the tenon, did you take equal amounts from each of the two faces that are parallel to the leg tenon or only from one. The only reason I ask is that, only planing one edge would probably mean that the tenon is no longer exactly centred in the leg and, if I were doing this project, I know that, unless all the tenons were centred, I would probably end up putting the mortises in the wrong positions to ensure that the leg finished flush to and square with the benchtop. In practice, I suppose what you will do is take your marking gauge measurements from the actual leg in the correct orientation and mark out each separate mortise position accordingly.
    Keep up the good work.

    Jeremy

    Jeremy,
Astute observation! Yes I made sure to take equal amounts from each leg. I alternated passes on each face until I have the leg at final thickness. The mortises in the top will be transferred directly from the tenons anyway, but the perfectionist in my wanted them centered.
