Rust Removal and Prevention on Hand Planes

I had some rust show up on a few block planes that I took to WIA in Ohio through many many miles of rain. I get questions about rust removal from time to time so I thought a quick video to show how I deal with it and more importantly my rust prevention regime.

The products I mention in this video are (these are affiliate links):

Boeshield T9
Rust Free
Renaissance Wax

It’s great that the same 3 products that are typically used to prevent rust on power tools also work on hand tools. I mean, obviously the material is the same, but we generally just don’t think or treat them the same way. Great tips.

Thanks for the video. Just curious what kind of oil do you use on your rag?

And that is why I like wooden planes, no rust problems. Every metal plane I own needs to be taken apart and wipe down with oil and then it will still rust.

I just found jaoba oil works great on our Woodriver planes have never had a spot of rust on them we even use it on our Bedrock and Bailey planes with great results. Our shop is very humid in the basement of an old home. Keep up the good work. Bubba

Sorry miss spelled jojoba oil and we use the filtered clear jojoba oil, you can use and we have, the yellow jojoba oil with great results. We get 2 oz amatizer bottles at natural food store for under $7.00 ea. and they last a long time. It has no chemicles that interfer with finishing

Somewhere I read about a rust preventive shelf liner at Lowest.

    So far so good.
