RWW #4: Setting Up A Hand Tool Shop

Welcome back to The Renaissance Woodworker Podcast episode #4. This week fresh from a major power outage I started thinking about the elements of a hand tool shop and how it differs from a power tool shop. Subtle but major differences all at the same time.

I also talk about the latest Pop Wood magazine and some ideas brought up by readers and listeners about making hand planes and lathe projects for the show.

Finally I mention several links throughout the show:

Bridge City Toolworks Commemorative Tool #15

Khalaf Oud Luthiery: Getting to Know Roubo

Popular Woodworking’s Greene & Greene online extra

Workbench Magazine’s shop planning tool

Here is a link to Amazon for “Hand Tool Essentials” one of my favorite books

Here are some pictures of my shop and a short video that will help to illustrate what I have done and my vision for the future.

This is a series of pictures moving from the front at the garage door towards that back wall showing the original fixed cabinets.

You can see that I am really limited on flexibility with all these fixed cabinets. Great storage space, but no room for a bench. Check out this video on the current state of things.

Just started listening to you and thought I would start at the beginning! anyway, Bob Rozaieski over at http://logancabinetshoppe.weebly.com uses a very small “footprint” for his hand tool only shop… a very efficient use of limited space.

Chris you are so right. Bob’s shop actually looks much bigger than it is because he exemplifies the points in this podcast. It’s amazing how little space you need and how efficient this style of shop can be. Thanks for listening.

    Hey Shannon

What happened to the video of your shop tour from 8 Sep 2008?
Just the audio link seems to be there. I was just wanting to take a quick trip down ” RWW memory lane” and couldn’t find video….

Your guess is as good as mine. It may have dropped off when blip recoded all my old episodes. I just put a free embed in and it is working now. Funny how so much has changed yet some things never do. I just had a power outage postpone a Hand Tool School demo and this episode 4 years ago is coming off another power outage that really started me thinking about a hand tool shop.
